Trust the True King

Pastor Tony opens a new series on the life of David by examining 1 Samuel 8, where the Israelites first demand a human king. Drawing on a personal experience of terror on a “giga coaster,” he illustrates the central big idea: we must trust the true king because human power and worldly solutions lack the power to save us. By requesting a ruler “like all the other nations,” the Israelites were not just seeking a new government but were rejecting God’s authority and forgetting His past faithfulness. Pastor Tony warns that whatever we allow to rule our lives—whether it be success, approval, or materialism—will ultimately enslave us, whereas Jesus is the only King who does not “take” from His people but instead gives His life to save them. Listeners are challenged to practice a “theology of remembrance,” continually recalling God’s grace to avoid looking to the world for what only Jesus can provide.
